Hello,
You might want to check in with the Health Department in your area, specifically the person who inspects/issues permits to your camps. For camps you can set up what is called a "Notice of Intent to Possess and Use Epinephrine Auto Injector". The Health Department has the paperwork that needs to be completed, it also tells you all of the things you need to have in place - protocol, required trainings, reporting procedures, tracking of Epi-pens, etc.. The plan is then mailed in to the Regional EMS Council. Ours is in Syracuse. This is what we use during the summer; we do have the luxury of having a nurse on site at out day camp, but this is not required. This plan applies only to our summer camps, not year round programs.
Good Luck,
Liz

Hello,
In the Village of Irvington we have staff trained.
We make sure each camp has at least 2 staff capable of administering an epi
pen.
Our local Ambulnce Corps is very helpful getting our staff trained.
Good Luck

Good afternoon,
The Town of Perinton counselors are all given a first aid course which
also teaches how to administer the epi pen. They are labeled and kept in a
locked box at the playground site. They must be taken home each day and
brought in on the next. We do not allow medications to remain overnight.
We do take the pens on all field trips in a medical kit, which is the site
supervisor's responsibility.

Hi,
We teach how to use the epi pen in all our first aid and CPR classes. All
our directors and usually the Asst. directors must take this class. We do
not have nurses at our camps. Hope this helps.

Hello!
I am wondering what other Recreation Departments do about EPI pens. We
have also been instructed not to administer medicine, however, it seems like
more and more children are needing to carry around an EPI pen to do
allergies. What do you tell your staff? What do you tell your parents?
Does it differ if you do or do not have a nurse on board? Does a first aid
certification change anything? Any guidance would be appreciated. I am
asked to re-evaluate our policy and then propose something to the town
attorney.
Thanks for your help!
