The Town of Malta has done background checks for the past three years on
any and all employees, full or part-time over the age of 18 . This
includes summer recreation staff, who, in addition, have their names
sent to the Division of Criminal Justice to be checked against the
updated sexual offender list.

All volunteers and independent contractors who provide programs or
services to youth and seniors are required to consent to be checked,
also.

The Town uses Southeastern Security Consultants, Inc. to check against
the following -criminal record, social trace, sexual offender and Let's
Check for America lists. We pay $25 for this service. We have been
checking employees since 2000.

If a violation is found, we discuss it with the Town Board in executive
session.

Hi Jerry,

The Town of Webster is currently reviewing this policy.

Our tentative recommendations to the Board is as follows,

All full and part time employees will be required to have background
checks prior to their hiring.

The checks will be conducted by our Town police department, there is no
cost incurred by Parks and Rec.

Background checks do not apply to anyone under 18 as their records are
sealed.

This policy does not apply to summer staff unless they are adult
supervisors.

This policy does not apply to current employees.

In terms of criterion used to determine hire or no hire, we have none.
We believe this gives us maximum flexibility in our decision making
process.

Hope this helps.

Mark

Dear Fellow NYSRPS members

The Town of Greenburgh Department of Parks and Recreation presently
conducts criminal background checks for all our volunteer coaches but we
do not conduct background checks for part-time, seasonal or fulltime
employees. The Town is in the process of forming a committee to develop
a policy and if your municipality or agency conduct criminal background
checks for your employees, I would appreciate if you could spend a few
moments answering the below questions.

1. Which employees do you conduct criminal background checks for
(fulltime, part-time, seasonal or everybody)?

2. Do you do background checks other then criminal checks? If
yes, what type of check?

3. Do you require that the background check to be completed before
hiring?

4. What criteria (or criterion) is used whether to hire or not
hire (examples: type of offence-misdemeanor or felony; the length of
time since the offense occurred)?

5. Was a policy for criminal background checks developed and
approved by your board/council? If yes, please send a copy via email or
fax.

6. Where do you process your criminal background checks and how
much does it cost?

7. What is being done regarding existing employees, and are there
procedures in place?

Thank you and feel free to add any other information relevant to this
topic.

Gerry
